Myth #5

Use of manure in pivot irrigation spews the smell everywhere.

  • Opponents say “The use of pivot irrigation systems causes greater odors and may spray manure onto passing cars.”
  • In truth, pivot irrigation systems are better than many other forms of manure application.  Pivot irrigation has a low runoff potential.  Studies show that the odors emitted from pivot irrigation last much less time than the odors from surface application.  Farmers are encouraged to use pivot irrigation when there is minimum wind to discourage the spread of odors.
